Would you like to be able to decorate your own cakes? Let us help you perfect those skills with a series of evening workshops designed to give you all the skills you need to create a fabulous celebration cake that can be tailored to any event!
Over three evening sessions, our resident cake designer (YORKCakes) and creator of all things sweet, Kate Clarkson will teach you all you need to know to create the perfect celebration cake.
- Week one (6th October) - Icing. Following demonstrations by Kate, you’ll be covering/icing a sponge cake with a layer of sugar paste icing. You'll need to bring along an eight-inch sponge cake that you've just baked (or we can provide one for you for an additional £20. We need a minimum of one week's notice to be able to do this for you). This involves preparing your cakes (filling and levelling off) and then coating the prepared cake with ganache. Once this has had a little time to set, you’ll then ‘ice’ your cake.
- Week two (13th October) - Piping. In this second session, you will learn some basic piping skills using Royal icing. These will include how to make a piping bag, various piping techniques and the effect different icing tips/nozzles can create. You'll be piping onto an iced cake drum that you'll prepare at the beoginning of the session.
- Week three (20th October) Sugar flowers & modelling. In this final session, you’ll learn how to create a variety of simple sugar flowers and some models depending on what you choose to do. These can all be taken away at the end of the session.
We'll provide an apron for you to work in but if you'd prefer to have your very own, high-quality, embroidered YORK Cookery School apron, they are available to buy. Simply add one to your order and we can post it to you or just give it to you when you come to the class.
It’s a good idea to bring along some containers/boxes to take your creations away each week.
The cost includes all cake decorating materials (except for the sponge cake required in week one) and covers all three sessions.
