Introduction to Cake Making & Decorating (3-part course)

Do you want to bake and decorate your own cakes? Let us help you perfect those skills with a series of evening workshops designed to give you all the skills you need to create a fabulous celebration cake that can be tailored to any event!

Over three evening sessions, our resident cake designer (YORKCakes) and creator of all things sweet, Kate Clarkson will teach you all you need to know to make the perfect celebration cake.

  • Week one (12th September) - Baking. Following demonstrations by Kate, you’ll bake two delicious sponge cakes - one to be taken away with you to eat at home (yum!) and another to be kept at the School, in the freezer, to be iced the following week. There will be two recipes to follow and you’ll be making buttercream to fill the cake you take home.
  • Week two (19th September) - Icing. This week you’ll be covering the cakes you made the previous week with a layer of sugar paste icing. This involves preparing your cakes (filling and levelling off) and then coating the prepared cake with ganache. Once this has had a little time to set, you’ll then ‘ice’ your cake. By the end of the session, you’ll have a perfect blank canvas (your iced cake) to decorate.
  • Week three (26th September) - Decorating. In this final session, you’ll learn how to create a variety of flowers and some models depending on what you choose to do. Kate will show you some of the basic sugar craft techniques to help you decorate a cake. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn some piping skills with Royal icing.

We'll provide an apron for you to work in but if you'd prefer to have your very own, high-quality, embroidered YORK Cookery School apron, they are available to buy. Simply add one to your order and we can post it to you of just give it to you when you come to the class.

The cost includes all ingredients and recipes and covers all three sessions.
